At the close of the 19th century, Highfield Hall sat as a sentinel of gracious living atop a hill overlooking the village of Falmouth and the harbor beyond. The landscape, as originally envisioned by landscape designer Ernest Bowditch and wrought by the Beebe family and their gardening staff, included three distinct garden areas. Although all of the gardens were abandoned in the 20th century, the character-defining features remain and await reawakening. Restoration of the cultural landscape will allow Historic Highfield to interpret Highfield Hall within the context of its original estate setting and will create a treasured outdoor community recreation space for generations to come.

The Master Plan for Landscape Restoration
Lucinda Brockway
In 2006 Historic Highfield hired noted landscape preservationist and landscape designer Lucinda Brockway to create a master plan. Using historic photographs, clues from the existing landscape, and her vast knowledge of historic gardens, Brockway generated a plan that recreates the structure, appearance and intent of the original gardens, while at the same time being sympathetic to modern uses and maintenance concerns. Summary to Accompany the Master Plan
by Lucinda Brockway
To document her findings and decisions, Cindy wrote a "Summary to Accompany the Master Plan." The Summary includes photographs of the existing landscape features, historical photos of Highfield and its grounds, and information about the original landscape architect, Ernest Bowditch. Master Plan of the Highfield Hall Landscape
The Master Plan is being implemented in phases, the first phase having begun in 2008 with the planting of 27 new trees on the property. Work continued with the landscaping of the new parking area and the restoration of the Highfield Ice House. To see a larger image of the Master Plan click here. |

Plan for the Sunken Garden
The Sunken Garden, located across the road from the entrance to Highfield Hall and adjacent to Highfield Theatre, was restored in the summer of 2011. Highly visible to all who come up the hill, the Sunken Garden has quickly become an added attraction for Highfield Hall and a popular place for visitors and residents to sit and contemplate. Plan for the West Garden
The West Garden, also known as Franklin's Garden, is located to the rear and below Highfield Hall, just off of the path that leads to Beebe Woods. While historically this was a cutting garden, the presence of shade trees prevents that same use today. Restoration of the West Garden began in May of 2012 and will continue through the spring of 2013. The shape and design of the garden has been restored, but plants are more shade tolerant and provide a lovely setting for the pink granite gathering space at the center of the garden.
