“Marine Paintings from Charles Legarde”
Born in New Bedford, Charles Legarde has had a lifelong attraction to the sea and
ships. Legarde pursues this passion to perfection in his
luminous and highly detailed oil paintings of the sea and
vessels that sail upon it. Legarde approaches each painting with
the precision of a scientist and has studied with a number of
fine artists including Julia O’Malley-Keyes. Don't be fooled,
his paintings look almost like photographs from a distance --
that is how detailed and true to life they are.

“Sweet Light. Photographs by Arni Cheatham
Photographers have a term, “Sweet Light”. Definitions
will differ slightly between individuals, but I usually define
it as the light found from thirty minutes before to thirty
minutes after sunrise and one hour before to forty minutes after
sunset or under certain atmospheric conditions such as clearing
storms. This is the time when the sun is low in the sky and the
light is warm and rich, complimenting all it touches. Under
these conditions the photographer’s job is to create a perfect
recipe with time and light as the main ingredients. The artist
must capture the right light at the right time and the right
amount of light for the right amount of time. The images in this
show, many of which were taken on Cape Cod are my attempts at
perfecting the recipe over the years. The important thing that I’ve
found is that as I explore nature with these goals in mind, I
become ever more deeply loving and respectful of the natural
environment, and my soul becomes “Sweet and Light”.
